Griffco Design/Build is proud to break ground as the design/build partner on an automated freezer expansion for United States Cold Storage in McDonough, Georgia. The ceremony brought together leadership from USCS, Griffco, locally elected officials, and representatives from the Henry County Development Authority to mark the start of this important milestone for the project and the community.
The 167,500 SF expansion represents Phase 3 of USCS’s McDonough campus build-out and will further increase the site’s capacity to support growing industry demand. The expansion includes a -10°F / +35°F ASRS freezer and automated layer-pick area, +35°F shipping and receiving dock, +35°F rail dock, and essential support and mechanical spaces. When complete, the facility will add more than 40,000 pallet positions, additional dock doors, and expanded rail service—enhancing throughput, storage density, and operational efficiency.
“This is an important project for the region’s cold chain and the growing demand for refrigerated logistics. We’re excited to work with USCS on a project that advances automation and the future of food distribution,” said Scott Griffin, Founder & CEO, Griffco Design/Build.
USCS leadership emphasized the long-term value of the expansion and its role in supporting customer growth. “This project is about future-proofing the business by increasing capacity, efficiency, and competitiveness in a fast-growing, temperature-sensitive market,” said Dedric Thomas, General Manager. “It allows us to support customer growth with more space, faster turnaround times, and greater flexibility.”
The McDonough facility is a flagship operation for USCS and has earned repeated customer recognition for performance in receiving, storage, handling, and shipping. This expansion builds on that strong foundation while positioning the operation for continued growth.
Local leaders echoed their support for the project and its importance to Henry County. “Today is a great day for Henry County and a beautiful day for a groundbreaking ceremony. We really appreciate the work we’ve been doing with US Cold,” said Sharon Hill, Executive Director, Henry County Development Authority.
